Yeah, yeah, yeah …

Translate Japanese books about acupuncture

When I was studying, during vocational school and later in a general hospital where the son of SHIROTA BUNSHI (Shirota Fumihiko) had set up a "Research Institute for Oriental Medicine", I read the books of late Shirota Bunshi sensei. At that time MOST people in the field knew him and his books, which most definitely had a major influence on the development of postwar acupuncture in Japan. And they are about the ONLY source of information pertaining to master Bunshi's own master: SAWADA KEN sensei.

Even after extensive search I did not find, however, any English (or other languages, with the exception of a pirated Chinese book) translation. I was once even asked by an American person running an acupuncture clinic in the States visiting me in my clinic, to find some spare time to translate Shirota sensei's book(s) into English, since he really wanted to know, what the original text said and not only read reports ABOUT those books.

Feeling very honored by that suggestion, I proposed to start with "鍼灸真髄" (Essentials of Acupuncture).

However … I did ask the publisher of the Japanese version several times and even proposed to translate the book and publish it for free as an ebook, but was denied the right to do so because of "copyright reasons". And that even though the wife of late Shirota Fumihiko sensei asked his "deciples" (of which I seem to be a member) to spread the knowledge of this outstanding master.

Since said copyright will be in place for another 18 years, I do not think, I will ever be able to translate that book in my remaining lifetime.

Boycott America

I have been working as a freelance translator for almost 40 years. When I first heard of Trump and saw what he does, I decided never to work for American companies again. By now I probably declined job offers worth about 2,000 USD. Being a member of the (very) low income group, I cannot really afford that kind of sacrifice, but I paid the price gladly!

Living in Japan I worked naturally mostly for Japanese companies, but also quite a list of companies from other countries. Yet, working for a number of American companies over a period of about 35 years had never been pleasant or even gratifying after all.

Announcement

I do support and agree with the “Make America Go Away” (MAGA) movement. In fact, I started to refuse to work as a translator for American companies for the last ten years. I believe, by now the reasons do not require any explanation or justification. Occasionally working for American companies over a period of over 30 years has NEVER been pleasant or gratifying after all.

And yes, I refuse to buy American products whenever possible.

Foods – Herbs – Drinks と複数の写真が飾られている。

"Herbs – Drinks" に異存はないが、"Foods" は可笑しい。英語には「数えられる名詞」と「数えられない名詞」があるからです。Food は数えられない。One food, two foods は言えない。同じく one bread, two breads も言えない。

結局どうでも良いでしょうが、あの大きさの看板は恐らく20万やそれ以上のお金が掛かると思うから、攻めて一つか三つの単独の言葉に誤りがあるかないかを家に恐らくある辞書で引いてもういいのではないでしょうか。

"Gobbledygook"

About 15 years ago a Japanese publisher (Idononippon) specialized in Oriental medicine asked be to write a book about some of my personal views regarding the practice of acupuncture. Apparently the director of that publisher who used to come for treatments did like my approach.

The published (printed on old-fashioned paper) was made available to all bookstores in Japan as well as Amazon (where it may possibly still available ).

The title of the book written in Japanese is "トーマス先生の話を聞いてみませんか" (Thomas sensei no hanashi wo kiite mimasen ka).

However, when you switch the site language to English, you get a "title" that makes absolute no sense (regardless of whether you can read the Japanese or not):

"Gentleman Acupuncturist Thomas Teacher You Have To Listen To Me. A Good Night Sleep – Good Forever Birthday For The Health Of Law"

Well done, Amazon!

If that is the level of computer aided translation, maybe there is after all still some work to be done as a translator.

The book is finished

Finally!

After 10 years of effort, the translation of the autobiography of pries Suhara Koun is finally finished – a little earlier than expected. Admittedly, I did not have the time to work on the project for a few years, but it nevertheless stayed on my mind.

Written by a Buddhist priest who took up kyudo late in life, something which became a defining element for him, it contains a lot of ‘old-fashioned’ / unusual Japanese even Japanese people have difficulties understanding. Apart from that Buddhist, zen, kyudo terminology, Chinese poems etc. I really had to struggle with this material.

Yesterday I published the book on Amazon and through another site worldwide. Although I submitted the required file format to those sites, they somehow “converted” the material, which resulted in a rather unappealing appearance. Even though I tried hard to look nice.

On the said sites, it is listed with a price tag of $9. One of the Japanese pronounciations for “9” is KYU. Put together the Dollar, you get “kyudo”. In the hope, you allow me to indulge in this little word play.

Russian war

I have been a freelance translator for about 35 years now.
Over that time I have registered on multiple translator sites like Proz.com, Aquarius, Translators Directory. Go Translators, translatorscafe and more that I do not even remember.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine and continues to kill everyone in their path (just like the orcs in ‘Lord of the Rings’) I did raise my voice on facebook (which is most likely totally irrelevant) and pledged never to work for any Russian agency again.

And since the devil Adolf Putin is systematically blocking news and all forms of information about his atrocities to reach the Russian people, I believe it would be appropriate to urge all those translator sites to block all Russian agencies from posting job offers. This may not have any “real” effect on the war, but as an indirect message it could result in a few more people in Russia wondering what is going on in the world.

So, personally I urge those translator platforms to do something.
And if any other freelance translator might be willing to add his or her voice, that would be wonderful.

The current situation is NOT something one should “let slide” - like the Chinese are doing!

New website

I am currently trying to modernize my webpage.
I created that with a piece of software that came with "Microsoft office 2000" = FrontPage 2000 - which is now 20 years old.
As such my present website is not able to keep up with smartphones and all that kind of modern hi-tech stuff.
Maybe the new version
*    http://einklang.com/wordpress/

can help there.
With an instruction manual in one hand I am still trying to figure out, how this Wordpress thing works.
Probably I am making a lot of mistakes all over the place.
Please let me know, if you do have any suggestions.
Thank you.

Shokutakuwakireinisettosareta.

https://www.town.hayama.lg.jp/material/files/group/2/98630760.pdf

その間違いを直す事はお金が掛かるから、恐らく最初から検討もしないでしょう。

* 私はこの国に少なくとも20-30種の名前あります!行政機関、保険会社、銀行、お店、ネット上(例えば問い合わせフォーム)などなど気が遠く成る程の「バリエーション」あります。

「ME-BYOシンポジウム」

 Good evening

Translation … and politics

I do not know much about politics. And frankly, I do not want to know about all those dirty tricks, lies, intrigues …

Yet, due to comparatively recent events I have started to read online news from around the world in the languages I can understand. Based on that information I decided among other things, that

1) since Trump I do not work for American companies any more. (I have not had a single pleasant experience working for American companies over the last 30 years anyway. Obviously they consider foreign freelancers as a form of slave labor. I would like to see the 'white, male, American married with family freelance translator rejoicing when getting a job paying less than in India of the past)

2) I do NOT work under ANY conditions for Chinese companies (I believe, the reasons for this decision do not need to be explained any more by now).

I am sure, my decision and the little notice it gets does not change ANYTHING in this dirty world, but I still wanted to raise my tiny voice at least once.

"Close"
店が閉まった時に、そのような「看板」は堂々と表ひ掛ける。今の時代には紙に印刷した辞書を手にする人は絶滅に瀕しているが、それ位の事はネットでさえ調べられる。

1) The shop is close.
2) The shop is closed.

Politeness in the digital age

I am registered in many sites pertaining to translation and interpretation. From one related to interpretation I got the following message in the afternoon. The job would have to be done the next day.

"New message from XXX XXX via interpreters.travel
Automotive world 2019 , tokyo big sight
January 17 (10:00 - 18:00)"

That is all. No "please" or "are you available", "could you help us out" ... nothing.
Just "Tomorrow. Be there!"
Naturally, I reclined the "job offer".
Is this the style of American, Chinese, Russian or other mafia like people.
Or is this now considered to be the "new standard" of politeness in the digital age?

Low rates even in Germany ...

Yesterday or so I received via one of the many translator sites an "job offer" from Germany.
It is about (urgent) translation work in the English-German language pair.
The company offers 0.04 Euro per Word.
(The company itself "naturally" makes a mistake, noting the rate as 0.04 cents - which would be approximately 0.0004 USD!)
It does not specify, whether these source or target words.

Maybe it is only me, but I dare doubt, that people living in Europe can make a "living" on those rates.
The 0.0004 USD/word rate totally out of the question.

It always seems to me, that the internet serves due to its lack of adjustments and regulations to match different conditions as a sort of parasite, eating away the basis for sound living.

Oriental medicine - translation

A patient of mine - who also tries to establish himself as a writer - wrote an article about me and somehow convinced an editor at the Japan Times to publish it. For people interested .. here the link to the electronic form.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2017/07/05/our-lives/unorthodox-acupuncturists-point-make-sure-never-come-back/#.WV2kJelpzcF

Most of it refers to my work as an acupuncturist. However, I am also working as a freelance translator. And if it comes to the translation of materials related to oriental medicine, or acupuncture in particular, just being a "native speaker" is not a sufficient qualification for the job. MUCH of the terminology used in this field is VERY unusual and often NOT understood without some additional explanation. Many attempts at a "standardization", or even the creation of glossaries, still have many problems to solve.

As a practicing acupuncturist with over 30 years of clinical experience I believe, I may be better "qualified" to handle this kind of material than many native speakers.

Personally, I would love to translate whole books and just articles for magazines. I presume, it would be much more gratifying than just articles. AND .. there are many very good Japanese books about acupuncture (or oriental medicine in general).
But the West has no access to this information, because the Chinese are deliberately trying to dominate the market - and to my dismay the West allows the Chinese to convince them, that they are the ONLY ones with any "authorative, genuine" knowledge about oriental medicine. I pity the people, who voluntarily choose to a "tunnel vision" perspective of the world.

Please feel free to contact me, if you do need/want to translate anything in this field.
