Translation - publishing

After a real printed book (in Japanese) of mine was published in February (2013) I am not about to publish my third ebook. The first was my autobiography, also written FIRST in Japanese, which I later rewrote, not translated, in German.
Now I am about to publish my third ebook, this one in English, listing a few personal views about why I think the Japanese acupuncture is better suited for the world population than the Chinese "authentic" style. Hopefully, it will go online in about 2 weeks.
It will surely make me a lot of enemies. If I should disappear suddenly in the middle of the night ... try asking the NSA and their hit squads, the newly formed Japanese copy of that wonderful agency, the Japanese NSC, or maybe the Chinese mafia, scared to death of people expressing opinions not meeting the standardized party line ...

After writing these four books, I definitely feel, that formulating one's own ideas is more interesting than converting somebody elses ideas into another language.

Although none of my books has really sold, the ebooks do not sell at all, I am planning to work on three more. My next target is the translation of a book by a Zen priest who I met shortly after my arrival in Japan. An encounter that changed my life.

"Automagical"

"is there any way of producing an automagical date in a XXX document?"

Wow. "Automagical" – you don't have to do anything, the date (a girl?) will work magic all by its own.
I also would love to have an automagical calendar.
No telling, what that thing might be able to do ...

The best way to prevent your health

I just got a spam mail. Although I did not bother to read it, it seems to have been related to "bedroom vigor" or some nonsense like that. With greetings from Russia.
The title says "The best way to prevent your health"
Wow!
Now, that is someting everybody surely wants to do, prevent yourself from being healthy. Ensure you are sick.
Then the pharmaceutical angels from all over the world can sell your all sort of garbage and grow rich in the process.

Let's thank our dear spammer friends over in Russia for their concern about everybody being too healthy.

責任力 - (2)

この話題は以前にも触れた:
http://transcurio.blogspot.jp/2010/06/blog-post.html

New word - "gibberization"

Recently EVERYBODY is talking about "globalization".
On the entire planet everything has to be the same -> "standardized" maybe "globalized" --- if there is such a word. Just one color, one taste, one concept for everybody. The Chinese will be ecstatic!!!

The so-called globalization also brings new/foreign words to the languages of the planet. That is nothing new.
But the mixup of languages resulting in those strange "neologisms" consisting of several parts from different languages, making the language all but unintelligible unless you are a freaky "insider" ...
The situation becomes much worse, if people start to mixup ordinary language with fashionable abbreviations like "LOL" ...

I would like to propose a new word for this trend.
Since "globalization" often leads to "gibberish" ...

How about
        "gibberization"

Term Assist

A littel earlier today I received an advertisement from Proz.com for "Term Assist", something that is supposed to "make your translation easier and faster by helping finding terms".

No offense, but after trying it out A LITTLE, I find it at best "useless".
I set my language combination to Japanese-English.
Select a term.
-> NOT the term selected is displayed, but the different characters taken apart and translation for the individual characters given.
That is NOT what I am looking for.
The given translation are "strange" too.

Apparent "Term Assist" is a Chinese product.

Obviously another example of the "Chinese quality" I have referred to several times before. The kind of "quality" nobody in his or her right mind would spend any money on.

I have seen similar things with "StarDict" - a dictionary software for Linux.
Even considering it being "free" (most of its contents seems to be pirated anyway), that thing too is for me as a translator useless.
I have other software (als FREE!) that works a hundred times better!

Common sense???

This is nothing new and if there are things that appear strange to me, it is probably because I "just do not get it". And if I am too stupid to "get it", it would probably best to shut up and say nothing.
Yet, I cannot help it ...

The other day there was again one of those "magnificiently strange" job postings on Proz.com. In this case I could not help but write a mail:

Good evening from Japan
Japanese-English translation is what I do for a living in this country (= Japan)for almost 30 years.
HOWEVER
Don't you think:
"Since the volume of the work is very high we need a very minimum quote.
Best quality work required." (quoted from the job post)
that is a contradiction???

If you want to buy high (highest???) quality products - ANY products, anywhere on the world - you will have to pay a higher price than for cheap junk.

A high volume may warrant some discount, but NOT "a minimun rate for best quality work".

But, as I said, I am most likely too stupid to see the logic and reason behind the posting.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A little later, in a different post it says:
"Only patent translators will be entertained."

WOW! The translators are being pain peanuts, but they are still "entertained". What kind of entertainment will this be??
The author probably meant "will be considered ..."
The proof of the high quality standards of the professional agency ...

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

And yet another one:
"The translator should be a full time freelancer and be able to provide 100% error free quality."

Unfortunately, I can speak only for myself, but "100%" error-free?
I always thought the idiom "nobody is perfect" has appeared in the English speaking cultural sphere PRECISELY because "100%" error-free is NOT possible for "erring humans" -> "to err is human".

Or are they maybe hiring robots and this is another example of me "not getting it" ???

Identity theft

This is the first time, it has concretely pointed out to me.
Two days ago I received a mail from a translation agency in Germany, for which I occasionally work. They asked me, whether a job application from someone describing him(her?)self with text portions from my public (multiple translator sites) profile actually came from me.

NO, it did not!
Somebody has set up a gmail address with my name:
blasejewicz1979@gmail.com
and offered his (her?) services to that translation agency.
THAT is impersonation, or identity theft.
The person is question is a thief = criminal!
If anybody comes across the above mail address ... you are dealing with a criminal.

When I searched the help section of Google, I only found, that THEY cannot (and will not) do anything about this and was referred to
https://complaint.ic3.gov/
Internet Crime Complaint Center

There I DID file a complaint about identity theft.
Although I do not expect anything to happen ...

According to that translation agency, this (fraudulent applications etc.) is SO frequent, that they do not do anything about it.
Probably you cannot do anything about it.

This sheds some very interesting light on the integrity and health of the human race!

Libre = Liberty = Liberty = 自由の意味。単なる「無料」ではない。自由を確保しようとしているものだ。
私はは奴隷より自由でありたい。よって、「自由」を強調するソフトを使う。

Crowdsourcing = reintroduction of slavery

Japanese writing
Japanese writing (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
or: craft dumping

Most likely I just don't get it. Crowdsourcing. The new business model everybody is fretting about.
From what I have seen or been offered, I think there is no other way of calling this but slavery.
Unless, of course, I am missing some very important points.

Let me name a few examples. And since the companies involved actually DO advertise this worldwide and WANT to be seen ... there cannot be much of an objection to me citiing their names.

1)    Today (7/20) from a "job offer" on Proz.com ->
"Appen Butler Hill is excited to announce ... crowdsourcing solutions for multiple annotation projects.
Crowdsourcing allows researchers to collect lots of interesting data points from a wide variety of individuals ...
We would like to invite you to participate in this extra task and EARN SOME CASH ... These Human Intelligence Tasks, called HIT’s, are used in a wide variety of applications – data annotation, multimedia, sentiment analysis, and search engine result evaluation.

How will I get paid for this task?
• Each task is assigned a rate per HIT. This rate varies by complexity of the task, but typically ranges from $0.01 - $0.10 per HIT submitted."

Let me get this straight. You, me, everybody participating in this "exciting opportunity" performs some "HIT".
Which appears to be some form information search.
Trying to paint a rosy picture, assume you can complete one HIT job in 5 minutes. You get paid 0.01 - 0.10 USD. Make it an average of 0.05 USD.
Then your hourly payment would be 0.05x12=0.6 USD/hour. Or 0.6 x 8 x 5 x 4 = 96 USD/month for a full time job!
At the same time I do suspect, that our friend Appen Butler Hill WILL actually make (a lot?) of money.

Another example. 2-3 days ago I received a "job offer" from one of those crowdsourcing sites. I registered there just for the fun of it.

"Greetings from Translia.com. The following job is posted on Translia.com, which matches your languages.
Job ID:  Job xxx
Source language: Japanese
Target language(s): English
Total words: 80
Translator rate (points/word): 7.3
Translation fee (points): 580
(one point is valued USD0.01)"

That is 580 x 0.01 = 5.8 USD.
Also not a rate I would jump up and turn the computer on for.

Finally. The other day I went to some sort of "job fair" in Tokyo. There too was a company trying to go into this crowdsourcing business.
The company calls itself "anydoor", based on a Japanese comic.
Its pamphlet said:
"Would you like to earn money?" .. and on the backside:
"Make Money
Get paid for your work via PayPal account.
Start translating and earn money now!"

Yet, their calculation and offer include following:
a standard job of about 720 Japanese characters (about 2 pages translation) will be paid 2 USD, or 0.02 USD/character -> about 1/50th of the usual rate.
Assume you can translate 2 pages in 40 minutes (often it will take longer), you get an hourly payment of about 3 USD/hour, which would mean a monthly salary/income for full-time work of about 500 USD/month.
To the best of my knowledge it is simply impossible to survice (not to speak of "live") on that money in Japan.

If this crowdsourcing is a new "smart business solution", I am sure some smart people will get very rich from sucking the intellectual blood of the "population at large". Not to mention that they a complete fool out of those old-fashioned translators, who still believe their job is a "craft" .....

なのに貰ったパンフレットに(表に): "Would you like to earn money?" そして裏面に:
Make Money
Get paid for your work via PayPal account.
Start translating and earn money now!

http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/thoacu/60198723.html

Abe no Mix (abenomics)
だとずっと思った。何を混ぜているのだろうか???
英語ぽくで通じて欲しいならば、アクセントを「の」におく必要がある。

似たようなものに関して前にも触れたことある:
* 野球チーム → ほら吹き (Hawks -> hoax)
http://transcurio.blogspot.jp/2010/06/blog-post_6663.html

* 窓壊しの衣類??  ウインド・ブレーカー
http://transcurio.blogspot.jp/2012/12/blog-post_31.html

Volkswagen - the real "German"

The other day I had to do a translation job involving material from Volkswagen. That company is supposed to be a sort or "representative German" company. Founded by German engineers is may be considered a "pure blooded" German company.
They have their own online glossary - to which I as a translator was supposed to refer to.

Well, let's have a look.
The list of terms when copied into a text file, removing unnecessary elements amounts to 308 lines of text (441 words). It includes about 19 abbreviations. Excluding those, I counted the English words in that list: about 74. That represents 25% of the total.

If one would include also terms that END in English terms -> better call those "attachments" - the ratio would be still higher.

Now, my dear German engineers. Are there really no German terms? Or are the people, who come up with these terms in the first place are incapable of creating good sounding, comprehensible (new) German terms?
Pity.

And how can I as a translator determine what's right and what wrong? The hybrid language is neither English nor German. Maybe "Gerlish"?
Is there a dictionary for Gerlish I could refer to when in doubt?????

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C8T1ZNW

Select your sex?

Another revolution in the field of biology?
No, just the result of using a cheap translator.

Yesteday I got a call from a translation agency about an "urgent cross-checking job". The original translation was a questionnaire (to be conducted in Germany) from Japanese into German. (for those of you who read German, the above phrase was: "Bitte wählen Sie Ihr Geschlecht.")
Naturally it should have been "indicate your sex".

And there were literally millions of similar strange expressions.

I told the agency: this cannot have been done by a German translator. When I asked them, what kind of person did this translation (I suspected a Chinese of Indian (cheap) translator), I was told, this was done by a Japanese, who considers himself good at German and teaches German at a university!
Well done indeed.

Academic!
"Bitte wählen Sie Ihr Geschlecht." Does neither contain any misspelled words nor is the grammar wrong. The only thing that is wrong is the meaning! But that is probably something an academic is not capable of detecting. In particular since a "direct" translation of the Japanese would result in precisely the above sentence.

Well, the translation agency that assigened the job to that particular person has lost a lot of money (and possibly also a client).
The client (likely a camera maker) on the other hand, that presented said questionnaire to the general audience in Germany and got apparently lots of claims, because ordinary people could not understand the text of it, may have suffered a severe blow to its image. The damage done may have been very costly and may require some time to "heal".

Maybe ... MAYBE ... both client and translation agency do learn little lesson: DO NOT hire cheap translators for important work.
If you pay specialists peanuts for their work, you may expect to get some foul smelling s**t ... if you pardon my French.

出版に続いて「自伝」(更新)

大体出来ているが、AmazonのKindle版(電子書籍、凡そ500円と予定している)として出したけれども、現時点でまだ技術的な問題のため上手くいかない。近日中に出ると望んでいる。

言葉はどうでものか

先日町自転車でを走っていた時道路沿いに整骨院があった。整骨院がそこにあった事自体は別に何の問題もない。
しかし、・・・
玄関上に日本語の名所以外「英語名」も書いてあった。そこに問題!
英語では:
"Surgical Operation Place"
となっている。
"Surgical Operation" - 無論これは「外科手術」の事だ。
それでは
"Surgical Operation Place" - 「外科手術所」なのか???
お蕎麦屋さんみたい。
それでは:
「外科手術!格安だよ!一きり380円。らっしゃい、らっしゃいませ。らっっしゃい!」

柔道整復師は外科手術出来る訳ない事は言うまでもないだろう。

横文字さえあればいい。言葉の意味何てどうでもいいようだ。

Submit your quote ...

Many of the jobs offered on Proz.com and other translator sites require, that you "submit your quote".
BUT ...
then you get "offers" like the following one.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Job type: Potential Job
Service required: Translation
Languages: Japanese to German
Job description:
    Medizinbericht (means "medical report")

Contact method: Please submit your quote via ProZ.com by clicking the "submit quote" button below.
Company: Fachuebersetzungsdienst GmbH
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Yet, there is no information about
-    specialty (orthopedics etc.)
-    volume
-    due date
-    any other special requirements.

Is it only me? How am I supposed to "quote" on something I have absolutely no information about?
Would these people barge into a car dealers office and yell: "I want to buy a car. Give me your quote" without specifying the kind of car, maker, model, options etc.? I doubt it.

This company is a very big company with offices almost all over the world. I would like to think, that this is proof of them being "professionals".
Do professionals ask this kind (quote for a car ...) question?
I thought professionals know better .....

It's published

After quite some time, finally "my book" - the book the publisher wanted me to write - has been published.
Since it is out, it would be nice, if it were sold. So, everybody who reads Japanese (I wrote the original in Japanese, but if anybody is interested (publishers!), I can also render it into English and/or German) and can afford it ... please buy a copy ....

本が出来たようです。ないように関して怒られるに違いないが、出来た上で是非とも一冊買って下さい・・・

My book

I just posted an announcement telling people of the publication of a book I have written.

Actually, I was asked to write this book by the company Ido no Nippon, where I usually buy my acupuncture stuff.

Presumably the book will become available in March or April and I have not yet written a summary in English, but I was somehow wondering, whether this might be interesting for people outside Japan.

Similarly, a number of my patients has asked me, to write a book about why I came to Japan and detail my path up to the present. (I came here 34 years ago, because I was possed by the fixed idea, that I want to learn Kyudo = Japanese archery.

To me, this was/is all the result of the natural course of events ... but other people consider the story to be "interesting", if not even "intriguing.

Would there maybe a publisher anywhere abroad interested in such a story?
It could shed some very strange light on the Japanese acupuncture scene ...

Chinese communication skills ...

This evening I got an email:

"Hi,
Now we have some documents about angel grinder need to be translated from English into German.please let me know your offer.thanks.
The documents are in the attachment, please check it."

The address showed, this came from China. I later checked ... there actually IS a translation company that would match the mail address (http://www.qctrans.com/), but ...

No self-introduction, no name, no contact information, nothing.
Naturally, no "proper" addressing of a potential service provider.
Since I have never worked for those people, I think it would be only "proper" or "normal" to address me as "Mr. Blasejewicz". Since THEY found me, this information must have been available to them.
Or, am I too old-fashioned???

Somehow I have difficulties imagining me attending a party and addressing the president of a company I have not yet had any contact with like:
"Hi, how cheap can you sell me your stuff?"

Or is this how people deal with each other these days?
If not ... these Chinese people have serious communication troubles.

PS: I told them my rate. Naturally I never got an answer to that. How surprising.
But living in Japan I cannot afford to work for Chinese peanuts.
